Does Hospice End Home Help Pay in Michigan?

Short answer: not automatically

Per MDHHS, Home Help personal care services can continue for a client living at home and receiving hospice, as long as those services don't duplicate what hospice already provides.¹

What actually determines it

• Where hospice is provided: hospice received at home doesn't end Home Help. Hospice received in a hospice residence, nursing facility, or adult foster care home does — Home Help can't be approved for a client residing in one of those settings, the same as any other facility placement.
• No duplication: per MDHHS, hospice services must be used first, and Home Help fills in what hospice doesn't cover. MDHHS's own example: if hospice provides bathing assistance Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Home Help can be approved for bathing help on the remaining days.
• Coordination between the two: hospice is required to contact the local MDHHS office and provide a written hospice plan of care. The adult services worker reviews it to confirm what's already covered, then documents what Home Help will additionally provide.
