What Happens to Caregiver Pay When Your Loved One Moves to a Facility?

Home Help pay is built around care provided at home — moving into a nursing home, assisted living facility, or similar setting changes that. Here's exactly how MDHHS handles the transition.

Pay stops once they're admitted

Per MDHHS, Home Help payment can't be made to a caregiver while a client is in a hospital, nursing home, institution for mental disease, home for the aged, adult foster care home, or incarcerated — the facility is reimbursed for their care instead.¹

How the admission and discharge day work

Payment generally can't be made for the day of admission to a nursing home, home for the aged, adult foster care home, or the day of incarceration.
For a hospital admission specifically, you may still be paid for that day if you completed services before the admission time.
Discharge day is different: Home Help can be paid on the day of discharge from a hospital, nursing home, home for the aged, or adult foster care placement, or upon release from incarceration.

What happens to the case itself

Per MDHHS, admission to a facility where your loved one no longer qualifies for personal care services in the community can close the Home Help case — and unlike most negative actions, this doesn't require the standard 10-business-day advance notice, so pay can stop quickly once MDHHS is notified.² If your loved one comes home later, you'd typically need a new referral and assessment to restart Home Help.

A short hospital or rehab stay works differently than a permanent move — the admission/discharge-day rules above are what govern it, not necessarily a full case closure.
